Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.

M1 - Discuss Strengths And Weaknesses Of Different Ideas
P1 - Explain Different Ideas For An Original Media Product Based On A Client Brief

Local Music Scene Needs You!

I was given a client brief about how I had to identify an upcoming music talent in North London, I have to link my product to the various codes and conventions that follow lots of media magazines. I had to get my ideas known to the people in North London and get them updated and interested in my ideas

I wanted to create a magazine that would have a massive edge over competitors, I wanted my magazine to stand out on the shelves on stores and attract the specific target audience. My first initial thought was to find a genre that was very popular with a varied target audience with a positive and eager target audience, after looking around on the internet I found that there was lots of popular mainstream and niche North London genres, for example, there was Grime which applied to the youth of North London, There was Hip-hop music and also there was a non-specific magazine idea.

Code And Conventions Of Common Music Magazines:
  • Main Artists On Front Cover.
  • Logo In Different Colour Usually At Top Of Page To Contrast Against Background/Text And Make It Stand Out.
  • The Text Contrasts Against The Background To Make It Stand Out.
  • Main Name/Title Of Magazine At Top Of Page In Big, Bold, And Again Different Colour Font To Make It Stand Out To Customers And Make It Important
  • Usually, In Double Page Spreads They Have The Artist Covering More Than Half The Page.
  • Social Media Links Like; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Usually Placed At The Bottom Of The Page To Interact With Audience
  • Main Artists Face Is Making Eye Contact With You
  • Language Techniques Used To Anchor Articles
  • Usually A Price
  • Certain Colour Scheme To Represent Mood And Tone Of Genre
RAP Magazine Idea 1 (P1)

The target audience for rap are aged at young adults ages around 15 - 18, I also know that there will be a fair split in genre between male and female, looking at the demographics the most appropriate group that the fans of rap link to are mostly going to be around 'E', this is because as teenagers most of them will be unemployed or be employed with a very low income, and compared to the other groups ABC1 they have a low disposable income. Also, young people in these ages have lots of free times on weekends and holidays as most of them do not have a job to attend to they have lots of time to visit and learn about the music genres they like in their area.

Strengths Of Idea 1 - Rap (M1)

Some of the strengths of creating my product around rap Is that it is a very popular genre to the youths that live in North London and there are so many artists that have so many different styles, songs and flows which these young teenagers love, with all the talent coming up new songs and content are always being produced which brings and unlimited supply of music to this genre as there is so much to talk about and express in my product,

Weaknesses Of Idea 1 - Rap (M1)

However, there are only a few minor weaknesses, for example obviously as these teenagers grow older they start to listen and move onto different lifestyles and eventually over time, fade away from going to music concerts and listening to and following certain artists and genres, also since a wide range of this age group are unemployed they could find it difficult to keep up a payment for the magazine.

    Font Ideas:

Hip Hop Magazine Idea 2 (P1)

Another one of my great ideas that I thought of was Hip-hop, After doing some research on my idea, I have found out that the Hip-hop demographics don't have a lot of cash, but they do spend a lot of their disposable income on their lifestyle, very few people in the Hip-hop genre are above the age of 65, this means that most of the listeners are ages 20 - 55 which has a very large age gap, I could consider lots of colours which would link to the electric vibe that comes with Hip-hop this would attract readers and more customers.

    Strengths Of Idea 2 - Hip-hop (M1)

A strength of making a Hip-hop magazine is that because of the large demographic age most people this age are groups B-C so they have a decent amount of disposable income. Another strength is that since there is sich a large age gap it has a great advantage over the rap magazine because of the wide range of audience. It is very mainstream so they will get more money for advertising. Some more positives are that there are a few very successful magazines such as XXL, The Source, Hip Hop Weekly Etc. the usual Hip-Hop magazines are usually quite plain, so I know what to add to make mine stand out.

    Weaknesses Of Idea 2 - Hip-hop (M1)

However, some weaknesses of Hip-hop is that it is not very popular in this day and age in North London and the hype for it has faded away over time, However, the one big strength is that there is not a lot of competition but lots of small artists. so variety is very good, A unique selling point of Hip-hop is that there is an unlimited supply of music and remixes, Hip-hop is not as popular as other genres.

      Non-Specific Genre Music Magazine Idea 3 (P1)

Another of my ideas was Non-specific media magazine, this would be filled with lots of information with all the genres put together, I would have to be careful that I don't overflow my magazine with information,

      Strengths Of Idea 3 - Non-Specific Genre (M1)

Some strengths of this magazines is that there would be a lot of places to sell the product and you will attract lots of new target audience, however, there are lots of weaknesses like if you overflow your magazine with information it would be confusing, Another strength of Non-specific is that you will always have content to produce, this is because if one topic/genre doesn't have major news then you can just research and get more information from other genres.

      Weaknesses Of Idea 3 - Non-Specific Genre (M1)
Another weakness is that if you have so many contrasting colour schemes then it's could deter your target audience away as they only want to buy the magazine for the certain font, the same thing links with what information you can put in, for example, if you have a target audience that loves rock music but hates classical then they will just not bother wasting their money on a topic/subject they are not going to read. One of the main effective things that will link to your magazine getting sold is the front cover, your front cover has to make your customer interested what the contents of your magazine features, so a major weakness is that if you have 4-5 different genres, who is going to be the main image on the front cover? What are the puffs going to say?, you can only have so much information, Furthermore, another disadvantage is the money, again if you make a magazine on 4-5 different genres you are spending 4-5 times the amount of advertising your magazine, through printing, billboards, TV and Radio.

More Ideas And Strengths And Weaknesses Of Non-Specific Genre Idea 3 (P1 & M1)

In conclusion, after looking at all the possible and vital strengths and weaknesses I am going to choose rap my idea 1 as my main choice, there are many reasons behind this, firstly it has a much younger target audience which is better over the middle-aged Hip-hop as they will be more enthusiastic and have more free time because of them being in the demographic group 'E'. They have the money to spend on my magazines rather than bills and other things, also there are  more rappers out in North London that are upcoming unlike in Hip-hop where that style of music doesn't really fit in with North London. It would be more beneficial and cheaper and easier to advertise to the younger audience which is another vital reason I will choose to go with rap.
